Sharapova Maria as Number One at Wimbledon
|
“I will do my best to become #1 ranked tennis player”, said Russia’s 17-year-old Maria Sharapova at the press conference after winning the prestigious Wimbledon Championship. In the final she defeated Serena Williams (USA) 6:1, 6:4. Sharapova confessed that her victory came as a true surprise to her.
“This is incredible. I never expected that I would win so soon, that I will get to hold the main prize of the tournament”, said she. “Wilmbledon has always been a dream of mine”.
Speaking about her final match with Williams, Sharapova said that she “got into the final the same way she did into the previous rounds of the tournament”. “I did not have any special tactics”, added the Russian tennis player, “I did not think about it being a final, I just tried to concentrate completely on my own game. That is probably the main reason I won.”
Sharapova also added that she is “not making any further plans”. “I need to get some rest, get back to normal and deal with this success. Right now I feel really tired”, she admitted.
According to Maria, in the future she has “a lot of work ahead to develop her game”. “I will do my best to win every tournament. In order to do that, first of all, I need to work on the physical side,” she says. When asked who had already congratulated her in the first minutes after her victory, Sharapova said “Yeltsin congratulated me, and I got to talk with one of my grandmothers, which lives in Gomel, Belarus. Also, Maria Kirilenko sent me an SMS.”
