Maria Sharapova won Wimbledon. In the final the young Russian defeated Serena Williams 6:1, 6:4. Sharapova took the first set with great confidence, immediately taking the lead in score with the first serve in the first game. Sharapova served in the opening game and her very first serve was a success, which set the tone for a victorious match. The Russian had a broad view of the entire court and was fully concentrated on the game, trying to return every serve, which she managed to do very well. Maria tried very hard to speed up the pace of her serves to make them match Serena’s powerful shots. In general, the first set was marked by long shots. After finishing the first set 6:1, Sharapova leading, both players went for a short break.

In the second set the fight was more intense. At times, Sharapova and Williams were playing on an equal level, and the American was even leading by 2 games at some point. Williams was struggling to regain the chances she missed in the first set. However, in the second set Sharapova proved to be an extremely skillful and versatile player, despite having little experience outside of junior Wimbledon championships (in 2003 she reached the 4th round, and in 2003 played in the juniors’ finals). And not even the new racket, with which the 22-year-old American replaced her old one, was able to rescue Serena during the intense finale of the match in the 10th game. In the second game of the second set Sharapova was in total control of the ball, sending it from one corner to the other, at one point causing Serena to slip and fall on the ground. Sharapova managed to change the course of the set, winning it at 6:4.

17-year-old Maria Sharapova became the first Russian tennis player in history to win at Wimbledon. For her victory at the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament, Sharapova will receive 560,500 UK Pounds (over $1 mil.).
